Title: Extrinsic Innervation of the Gut Wall
Description: This animation portrays the extrinsic innervation of the gut wall. The gut wall is innervated by both divisions of the autonomic nervous system, the parasympathetic and sympathetic. Extrinsic ("long") reflexes in extrinsic innervation include both afferent and efferent fibers. The efferent fibers do not innervate directly the effector cells; they modulate activity of the Extrinsic Nervous System (ENS) ganglia. Generally, the sympathetic decreases and the parasympathetic increases the activity of the ganglia they innervate. This animation promotes understanding of the neural regulation of gastrointestinal activities. Requires the Macromedia Flash plug-in.
