Title: Competencies for Examination of the Musculoskeletal System
Description: Although the musculoskeletal examination is a valuable component of the overall physical examination, the musculoskeletal exam competencies are among the most difficult for students to master. This site provides videos and descriptions that help students learn general musculoskeletal exam performance skills more effectively. Instruction emphasizes skills related to proper inspection, palpation, evaluation of range of motion, and determination of muscle strength. After studying these videos, students will be able to: (1) rely on body symmetry to assess physical disorders; (2) recognize signs of inflammation during the physical exam; (3) identify crepitus; (4) properly evaluate range of motion in the limbs and vertebral column; (5) interpret the role of deformities in the physical exam; (6) evaluate the significance of surrounding tissues in the examination process; and, (7) determine muscle strength on a scale of 0-5.
