Frequently Asked Questions

New Users

  • How do I register with HEAL?

If you choose to submit resources to HEAL, access detailed information about a resource, or download a resource for use, you are required to register. The registration process is accomplished via a simple form, with users selecting their own username and password. There is no charge for registration with HEAL.

  • Why do I have to register before I access resources, submit resources, or download content?

HEAL analyzes the aggregated usage information to improve its collection scope and free services. All information you submit is kept confidential and used for evaluation purposes only. Another benefit of registration is the option to receive updates on new resources, collections, and functionality.

Changing your user profile or password

  • I forgot my username and/or password. Whom do I contact?

If you forget your username and/or password, submit your email address via the Username and Password Reminder form. Your username and password will be sent to you automatically.

  • My contact information has changed. Can I update my profile or should I re-register?

You can modify your registration information at any time. After the initial registration process is completed, whenever you log in to HEAL an option to "EDIT USER INFO" appears at the top of the screen. If you click this option, you will be taken to the Edit User Registration Information page, which allows you to change the data in any field(s).

  • How do I change my password?

You can change your password at any time. Follow the instructions for updating your registration information.

Cataloging issues

  • I found an error in HEAL. Whom should I contact?

Inaccuracies in item cataloging or descriptions should be described to Shona Dippie, the HEAL Metadata Librarian/Cataloger. For any other issues send an email to info@healcentral.org with a copy of the error message and/or a complete description of the problem you are encountering in your use of HEAL. Your message will be answered personally.

  • Where can I find information about the HEAL metadata schema?

The HEAL metadata schema is the foundation on which the HEAL distributed system is built; the schema is based on international standards and includes extensions specific to the health sciences. You may implement the HEAL metadata schema on your local system or further extend the schema to meet local needs. The metadata schema provides an important mechanism for the HEAL server to share data with partner collections located on remote servers. As feedback is received from the health sciences community, the HEAL metadata schema is improved and updated. See the Metadata Schema page for additional information.

Searching

  • How do I find what I'm looking for in HEAL?

Along the left side of the HEAL home page there are three options for locating resources: Quick Search, More Search Options, and Browse.

    • Quick Search offers you the ability to enter single or multiple search terms. The Quick Search feature appears not only on the home page but also in the header of every page on the HEAL site.
    • An advanced search interface is presented when you click "More Search Options" (under the Search box). Here you can execute searches with multiple concepts and limit retrieval or search for items that match a specific parameter or set of parameters such as radiograph type, disease/process, etc.
    • You have the option to browse by Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) or browse by affiliate collection. Please note that not all items in the database have MeSH terms assigned and as a result these items are not reflected in the Browse view. Similarly, browsing by affiliate collection does not reflect those items contributed by individuals. Those submissions are contained in the HEAL Reviewed Collection.
